In Hong Kong, there are about 2,700 registered pharmacists and they practice in different sectors within the healthcare system. With the advances in therapeutics and increase in clinical and public health needs, there is a need for the pharmacist to receive continuing education and be specialized in specific areas of practice.
The College of Pharmacy Practice was established in September 2010 as a non-profit independent professional body of pharmacists with the aim of elevating the standard of pharmacy practice in Hong Kong. Pharmacy practice encompasses all present and future roles of pharmacists in various areas of professional practice. The College expects that through continuing education and the qualification of pharmacist specialists, both the professional image of pharmacists and the public recognition of the pharmacy profession will be enhanced. The ultimate goal of the College would be legislative change rendering the College a statutory organization responsible for the registration of pharmacist specialist in Hong Kong.
